Going into New Orleans the 76ers knew Zion Williamson was going to be a handful to guard, even though they have never faced him before. Doc Rivers was asked about trying to figure out how to guard Zion, he responded by saying that most of the league is still trying to figure it out but they were going to try to figure it out tonight. They didn’t.
The first half was pretty uneventful. Both teams didn’t shoot well and saw themselves tied at 50 going into halftime. However, the third quarter came and the Pelicans jumped out front of the 76ers building a lead up as high as 16. Despite a late-game push to bring the Sixers within 6 under two minutes, sloppy play, turnovers, and Zion Williamson proved to be too much as they fell to the Pelicans 101-94.
“I was really disappointed in our team. We got Adams off the court and had a 6’9″ guy guarding Joel. I had to call a time out to get our team to get him the ball, that should never happen. We were a mentally weak team tonight.”Doc Rivers on the 76ers performance tonight
Zion Williamson finished with 37-15-8 and Joel Embiid struggled scoring only 14 on 5 for 16 from the field. The Sixers will head to OKC to take on the Thunder tomorrow night at 9 pm.
