The Cincinnati Bengals announced the hiring of longtime Assistant Coach Sigismondo “Louie” Cioffi this afternoon. Cioffi will serve as the Defensive Quality Control Coach on Zac Taylor’s staff. Cioffi has over twenty years of coaching experience in the National Football League. Cioffi is brought back to Cincinnati after spending the better part of 14 seasons with the team from 1997-2010. He’s also had coaching stints in various spring football leagues, including the Alliance of American Football and the XFL.

Cioffi was the DC for the AAF’s Atlanta Legends in 2019. The league unfortunate folded after just 8 short weeks. His Legends defense allowed the fewest yards per game across the league at the time of the suspension of operations. Cioffi would find himself in yet another spring league the following year, joining Pep Hamilton’s staff on DC Defenders of the XFL. After originally joining the coaching ranks as the Defensive Backs coach, Cioffi took over as the Defensive Coordinator. Jeff Fitzgerald resigned during the season paving the way for Cioffi to get an increased role on the staff.
Cioffi looks to bring a veteran presence to a defense that finished last in sacks, and happened to be in the bottom third in many other categories. Sigismondo “Louie” Cioffi looks to sure up the Bengals defense this season. With a returning Joe Burrow on offense, the defense looks to take a jump forward into contention in a crowded AFC North division race.
The XFL continues to pay dividends to both former coaches and players as they work to get to the “big leagues”. Cioffi joins the likes of Tyree Jackson, Brian Khoury, Hunter Niswander, and even the above mentioned Pep Hamilton as Defenders players/coaches who have made the jump into the NFL.
