Marvelous Marvin Hagler Passes Away at 66

Marvelous Marvin Hagler from 1980-1987, was the undisputed world champion Middleweight boxer. He fought 50 times in the 7 year timeframe, that is just over 7 opponents a year. The best fight of them all was Hagler Hearns in April of 1985.

Billed as ” The War”, it only lasted 2 plus rounds but it was incredible. I watched it at Delaware Park. You could bet the ponies and the fight while enjoying cold libations. Hagler to win in less than 5 rounds was 5-1. Hagler was favored pretty much across the board but the “Hit Man” was favored on a couple lines on the fight going the distance. Halfway through the first round, everyone knew that the fight would not last long. Hagler was not a dancer. He came straight at you. If you had no defense other than a “jab and go”, you went down pretty quickly. Hearns tried to stay in and fight but that was even worse than getting on his horse and throwing a few jabs.

The fight known as and billed as “The War” didn’t let anyone down for all of the 411 seconds it lasted. Two Giants of Boxing in their Primes entered the ring and five minutes later Hearns needed the ref to hold him up. To me this showed me the True Hagler. The Hearns camp blamed it on a leg massage that The Hit Man had earlier in the day. If that is true, he deserved any bruises he walked away with. I personally don’t believe that is the reason. Hagler connected on far too many hits to Hearns head. This was the best 3 rounds in boxing, to me and many more.
