Temple Basketball Legend John Chaney Passes Away At 89

Philadelphia sports lost an icon today, as former Temple Men’s Basketball Coach John Chaney passed away. Chaney, 89 was a staple in Philadelphia sports and his tough no nonsense approach to the game was something beloved by the city’s basketball community. It’s safe to say his passing will no doubt affect many.

An Incredible Basketball Legacy

In his 24 years at Temple, Chaney won an impressive 6 Atlantic 10 Coach Of The Year Awards. His teams won 6 A-10 Tournament championships and made the Elite Eight round of the NCAA tournament 8 times. Many Chaney’s players went on to success in the NBA including 6th Man Of The Year Winner Aaron McKie and perennial All Star Eddie Jones. He is also the first African American coach with 700 career wins.

An Even Better Man Off The Court

I had the pleasure of the knowing the legendary coach away from the game. He was never afraid to give his opinion on today’s players let you pick is brain about the game he held so dear to his heart. Chaney was beloved by the community and was always met with warmth and admiration where ever he went. I can safely say we are all better off for have John Chaney on this earth.
