According to Adrian Wojnarowski and Zach Lowe of ESPN, there will be two separate meetings today, Thursday, November 5th. One with the NBA Board of Governors and one with the NBAPA, and by all accounts they should leave these meetings with an agreement on the start of the 2020-2021 season.
While they are still negotiating some financial aspects, like player escrow, it is expected that an agreement will come today. That agreement will include a 72 game season that starts December 22 and includes Christmas Day games. Once an agreement is reached it is expected that the league lifts the temporary moratorium on transactions, allowing teams to make trades prior to the November 18th NBA Draft.
The next month and a half, as far as the NBA, should look like this:
- November 5 – Expected agreement on 72 game season starting December 22. Temp moratorium lifted, trades will be allowed to happen.
- November 18 – NBA Draft
- TBD still (possibly 72 hours after the draft) – Free Agency starts
- December 1 – Training Camps start
- December 22 – Start of the 2020-2021 season starts
Starting the season prior to Christmas not only ensures the Christmas Day Tv revenue and with it only being 72 games, the season would also end around July, allowing players to still play in the 2021 Olympics, assuming they go as scheduled. Some players have been said to have some complaints about starting so soon after the Bubble, but being that NBA revenue is a 50/50 split between teams and players, and given the circumstances of playing games in a Covid world, seems as if missing out on Christmas Day TV revenue is something both sides do not want to happen.
Unless there is an unforeseen holdup, it is looking like we are just over a month away from the start of the 2020-2021 season. There won’t be fans, and it is unlikely there will be fans at least for the majority of the early part of the season, but back in March when the league shut down we didn’t know if we would have the NBA back at all this year but they did it. The NBA successfully pulled off the bubble and are looking to start the next season before years end, and although I understand where the players are coming from, personally and selfishly I’m fired up for it to start back up.
